History of Azimut yachts
Azimut Yachts has a rich history dating back to 1969, when Paolo Vitelli, a young university student, founded the company. Initially focusing on chartering sailing boats, Azimut quickly expanded its operations by distributing prestigious yachting brands in Italy. Soon after, the company ventured into designing its own yachts, starting with the AZ 43’ Bali, a fiberglass boat that gained immediate popularity.
Over the years, Azimut broadened its range to cater to both the lower and upper ends of the market. This included the introduction of the AZ 32’ Targa, dubbed the “Ford T” of the boat world, and the Azimut 105’ Failaka, the largest mass-produced fiberglass yacht of its time.
In a significant move in 1985, Azimut acquired Benetti, a historical brand renowned for its expertise in mega yacht construction. This acquisition allowed Azimut to innovate further, introducing industry-changing features such as large frameless windows, electric seats, and walnut interiors.
Throughout the late nineties and beyond, Azimut continued to expand its presence by acquiring new boatyards and restructuring existing facilities. This strategic growth positioned Azimut as a leading builder of yachts and mega yachts, with a strong global presence and a reputation for technological innovation and quality craftsmanship. Today, Azimut’s leadership in the industry remains evident through its numerous business successes and ongoing investment in technological advancements, including expanding production sites into Brazil.
