More about the Azimut 43s Model
Boat manufacturers seem to love the Volvo Penta IPS drive system for its ease of use. It’s almost like this system makes other parts of their boats easier too. On many 43-foot boats, walking forward on the side decks can be tricky, but on the Azimut 43S, it’s a breeze. Inside, the circuit breakers are set up nicely to handle any electrical issues, and accessing important parts like the genset and fuel/water separators is simple with three separate hatches.
Since IPS drives are the latest craze, everyone wants to know how the boat performs with them. My test boat had the 370-bhp IPS 500s, which powered it to a speedy 37.1 mph. The throttle response is smooth, and the boat handles well, even with subtle changes in power.
Maneuvering the 43S is easy, with tight turns and a responsive feel. Docking feels more like handling a runabout boat than a larger yacht, especially if you’re used to inboard controls. While my test boat didn’t have a joystick (an optional feature), I recommend getting one for easier docking – it’s like playing a video game!
Visibility from the helm is excellent, with minimal blind spots. The helm itself is well-designed, with instruments easy to read even in bright sunlight. There’s plenty of seating aft of the helm, although cupholders were notably missing.
Outside, the U-shaped cockpit lounge provides a comfortable spot to relax, with storage lockers handy for gear. Engine access is decent, though not the easiest for maintenance tasks.
Moving to the bow, accessing the anchor locker is straightforward. The construction is sturdy, with a solid fiberglass bottom.
Inside, the forward master stateroom feels spacious thanks to smart design choices. However, the location of light switches in both the master and day heads could be more convenient. The galley is functional but somewhat basic, located just a couple of steps below the salon level.
Overall, the Azimut 43S offers a comfortable and enjoyable boating experience, with impressive performance and user-friendly features.
